Kamala Harris: After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US Vice President Kamala Harris spent days in India. Kamala Harris said that India is a very important part of her life and she is deeply attached to this country. Recalling childhood memories, the Vice President said that when my sister Maya and I were growing up, our mother used to take us to India almost every other year. So that we can understand our roots and values in India. Also we can meet our grandparents, our uncles and aunts. Laughing that she used to take really good idlis to feed.
Dada’s thoughts influenced my thinking
Kamala Harris told that her grandparents lived in Madras. My grandfather was one of the favorite people in my life. We were friends of each other in childhood. My grandfather had a great influence on me. Since I was the eldest granddaughter in the family. So I took full advantage of that situation in the family.
He said that grandfather was a civil servant. After retirement, he used to go for a walk on the beach in the morning. I used to go with them. I used to listen to grandfather’s stories about freedom fighters and founding heroes of the country and India’s independence. I remember him talking about the importance of fighting corruption and fighting for equality, regardless of one’s faith or caste. The Vice President said that interactions with his grandfather at a young age influenced his thinking.

Reached here due to grandfather and mother
I remember that my grandfather not only taught me the meaning of democracy but also taught me a lesson about how to maintain democracy. I believe it is these lessons that I learned at a very young age that first inspired me to serve the public. I look back now and I fully realize the impact it had on me and my thinking.
A big part of who I am today is the lessons I learned from the dedication, determination and courage of my grandfather, PV Gopalan, and his daughter, my mother Shyamala. That is why I stand before you today as the Vice President of the United States of America.
