If you have a dream to settle in America then this news is important for you. The US government is going to make important changes in the test for the citizenship of the country. Now the standard of this exam will be more difficult. In this regard, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has presented a proposal.
Let us tell you that after following the necessary process, these changes will be approved. Prior to this, an attempt was made to change this exam during the last phase of former President Donald Trump’s tenure, but President Joe Biden had withdrawn these changes as soon as he came. At the same time, after 15 years, once again the process of change in this examination has started.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said that before implementing the changes, they will take feedback from the general public and then they will be implemented in 2024 after they are reviewed by an expert panel.
There will be 2 major changes in the Americanization test
- In the last step before getting citizenship, the applicant who has been living legally in America for years has to take the test, the process of which lasts for about a month. This is called naturalization test. 2 changes are proposed in this.
- An English speaking session has also been added to check your proficiency in English. Under this, the applicant will be shown a picture of normal weather or any food etc. and he will be asked to say anything about it in English. While the current naturalization interview asked questions about those registered with whom the applicant was familiar.
- The second proposed change to the test is in the civics section involving knowledge of American history and governance. At present, this multiple answer test is oral and in this the applicant was given several options in response to a question, out of which he had to choose one. But now these multiple answer questions will not be oral but written.
Know why these big changes are being made
US officials said in December that the last changes to the test were made in 2008 and that a review of the test was now pending. Also, the proposed changes were said to make the whole process more standard by adopting the latest formats of test design.
Record people got citizenship last year
According to data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), more than one million applicants were granted US citizenship in fiscal year 2022, a record number since 1907. In fact, USCIS reduced the backlog of naturalization applications by more than 60% last year.
