US Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter, “Vehicle collision at Lafayette Square. Roadways and pedestrian walkways have been closed to investigate the incident. A U-Haul truck was reported to have crashed into a barrier on the north side of Lafayette Square at 16th Street.

According to an official statement issued by the US Secret Service, “Just before 10:00 p.m. Monday night, Secret Service Uniformed Division officers detained the driver of a box truck after colliding with security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square at 16th Street. taken into custody.”

It added, “No Secret Service or White House personnel were injured and the cause of the accident is under investigation. Roads have been closed as a precautionary measure and pedestrian walkways have been blocked.”
