New Delhi: Transgender women will no longer be able to participate in women’s track and field events. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said on Thursday that transgender women will no longer be allowed to compete in women’s track and field events. Speaking after a meeting of the World Athletics Council, Coe said: “The council has agreed to exclude male or female transgender athletes from women’s world ranking competitions from March 31 this year.”

Coe said World Athletics had consulted with stakeholders including the International Olympic Committee and national federations about the issue of transgender athletes. Most of those consulted said that transgender athletes should not compete in the women’s category.”

She further said that many people believe that trans women should not be given the same benefits as biological women. They want more evidence that they have reaped the benefits of reform at any level before considering the option of including them in the women’s category. “The decision we made was in the best interest of our game,” he said.
