Supreme Court: The Supreme Court got two more new judges today i.e. on Friday. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to Telangana High Court Chief Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan and Kerala High Court Chief Justice SV Bhatti as Justices of the Supreme Court.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the apex court auditorium in Delhi, taking the sanctioned strength of judges, including the CJI, to 32 out of 34. Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan’s tenure will be till 2 August 2029, while that of Justice SV Bhatti will be till 6 May 2027.
The central government recently approved the promotion of Telangana High Court Chief Justice Bhuiyan and Kerala Chief Justice Bhatti to the Supreme Court. On Wednesday, it was approved by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Who is Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan?
Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan was born on 2 August 1964 in Guwahati. He did his schooling from Don Bosco High School. After this he did further studies from Cotton College, Guwahati. After graduation from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, he obtained LLB from Government Law College, Guwahati and LLM from Gauhati University.
Justice Bhuiyan started practice on 30 March 1991. He used to practice in the Gauhati High Court with his father Suchendranath Bhuiyan. Before becoming a judge, Justice Bhuiyan was the Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department for 16 years.
Justice Bhuiyan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 17 October 2011 and was made a permanent Judge on 20 March 2013. Justice Bhuiyan was appointed to the Bombay High Court in October 2019. After this, after about 2 years, he was transferred to the Telangana High Court. Justice Bhuiyan became the Chief Justice here on 28 June 2022.
Who is Sarasa Venkatanarayan Bhatti?
Born on 6 May 1962 in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, Justice SV Bhatti’s full name is Sarasa Venkatanarayan Bhatti. Bhatti holds a law degree from Jagadguru Renukacharya College, Bangalore. He started practice as an advocate in January 1987. On 12 April 2013, Justice Bhatti was appointed as an additional judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Justice Bhatti was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court on 14 April 2023 and later became the Chief Justice on 1 June.
