One Rank-One Pension: A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Monday on the issue of pension payment under the One Rank One Pension (OROP) policy. The Supreme Court reprimanded the Ministry of Defense and asked why the decision to give pension in installments was taken even after the order?
The apex court has summoned a personal affidavit from the Secretary, Pension Affairs, Ministry of Defence. It has also warned that the court will issue a notice of contempt. This comment was made by a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala.
Pensioners demanding payment in one installment
Actually, a group of ex-servicemen had filed a petition in the Supreme Court. It was demanded that the arrears of One Rank One Pension Scheme be paid to all eligible pension beneficiaries in one installment instead of four instalments. The matter was heard on Monday.
The court had given time till March 15
Earlier, on January 9, the Supreme Court had given the central government time till March 15 to pay the total arrears of One Rank One Pension to all eligible pensioners of the armed forces. At the same time, the government had moved the court demanding extension of the date of March 15, 2023.
What is OROP?
In 2014, the central government had announced the implementation of One Rank One Pension Scheme for retired soldiers. After three years this plan was implemented.
It was said that there would not be a big difference in the pension amount of two soldiers of the same rank who retired at different times. Even if they are retired. At present there are 25 lakh retired soldiers.
