New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh credited former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for saving tigers and enriching tiger reserves in the country. The Congress leader said on Saturday that 50 years ago, Indira Gandhi started Project Tiger in Corbett. Then there were 9 tiger reserves, today there are 53.

Jairam Ramesh tweeted, 15 months after launching the Gir Lion Project, exactly 50 years ago, Indira Gandhi started Project Tiger in Corbett, then there were 9 tiger reserves, today there are 53. Tiger reserves now cover one-third of the rich forest areas.

PM Modi will start mega event

Let us tell you that the Tiger Project was started in the country in 1973. While the Elephant Project was launched in the year 1992. The Forest and Environment Ministry is preparing to organize a program in April to mark the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger and 30 years of Project Elephant.

In this connection, on April 9, PM Narendra Modi will visit Bandipur Tiger Reserve during the election tour of Karnataka. PM will inaugurate the mega event to be organized in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts to mark the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger.
