Morbi Bridge: The Gujarat High Court has ordered Jaysukhbhai Patel, MD of Oreva Company, to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those killed in the Morbi bridge accident. At the same time, ordered to give compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the injured.
The police built on the Machchu river in Morbi city collapsed on October 30 last year. 135 people lost their lives in this accident. While 56 others were injured. The shocking thing was that the bridge was opened only 5 days before the accident after 7 months of repair. The fitness certificate was not even taken before opening the bridge. The contract for the maintenance of this bridge was with the Orewa company only.
Ajanta Manufacturing Limited (Orewa Group) had assured interim compensation during the hearing of a public interest litigation in the High Court following the tragedy last year.
