Naik fled to Malaysia in 2016
Actually, Zakir Naik fled India in 2016 on charges of spreading hatred and money laundering. He took refuge in Malaysia.
The same year, the Anti-Terrorism Agency filed a complaint against him accusing him of promoting religious hatred and other illegal activities.
Extradition will be discussed with Oman
Bagchi said that Zakir Naik is an accused in many cases in India. He is a fugitive. We have taken up the matter with the Government of Oman and the Omani authorities.
Naik will reportedly be in Oman on March 27. In response to the question of extradition of the preacher, Bagchi said that if India has an extradition treaty with Oman, I will examine it. He said that I think the list of countries with whom we have extradition treaties is already in the public domain.
Naik had recently said that Qatar had extended an invitation to him to participate in the FIFA World Cup. However, Qatar later refuted the claims saying that no such invitation was sent to Naik.
Home Ministry had banned Naik’s organization
Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation was declared illegal by the Union Home Ministry last year. Naik is accused of promoting hatred and disharmony.
