Justice Gangopadhyay was removed from the case this morning itself.
Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud removed Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay from a case on Friday morning. The Supreme Court ordered the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to transfer the teacher recruitment scam case to another bench.
Why did this clash happen?
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay gave an interview to a TV channel on 20 September 2022. In which he allegedly criticized the state government and the Trinamool Congress. When the Supreme Court came to know about the TV interview, it had said that any judge should refrain from giving interviews on issues that are pending before him.
What is teacher recruitment scam?
In 2014, the West Bengal School Service Commission took out the recruitment of teachers in government schools. Partha Chatterjee was the education minister at that time. The recruitment process started in 2016. When there were complaints of many irregularities in this matter, the matter reached the High Court.
The CBI filed the first charge sheet on 30 September. It contained the names of 16 people, including former education minister Partha Chatterjee. The ED arrested Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee. Partha Chatterjee is in jail since 23 July 2022. Recently, CBI had issued summons to Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of CM Mamata Banerjee. However, Abhishek has got relief from the Supreme Court.
