The Guyana Fire Service said in a statement on Monday that the hostel building in the central city of Mahdia was completely engulfed in flames. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire had spread. He said that 14 children died on the spot while five students died in the hospital.
The search for the cause of the fire continues
Mark Ramotar, director of police communications, said most of the 19 students killed in the accident were Guyanese.Police and fire services said they were working to ascertain the cause of the fire.

The police force said in a statement that a female student managed to escape from the scene. She told that she was sleeping when the fire broke out, but when the students started screaming, she woke up and came out safely from the spot. The student told that she first saw the fire in the bathroom of her house which gradually spread rapidly to other parts of the building.
