The French president, who arrived on Wednesday on a three-day state visit, shook hands with Xi Jinping outside the Great Hall of the People, the center of power in the capital. An AFP reporter said Xi welcomed his guest on a huge red carpet decorated with Chinese and French flags while the countries’ national anthems played. Western pressure is mounting on China to help broker peace in Ukraine. Although Beijing is officially neutral, Xi has never condemned Russian aggression.
