Assembly By-Elections 2023: Voting is underway for the by-elections to one assembly seat each in Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand. Tight security arrangements have been made for voting. Voting for the bypoll began at 7 am today and will continue till 5 pm.
The Election Commission said the results of the bypolls in these states will be released on March 2 along with the results of the state assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland.
Where and for what reasons are the by-elections being held?
Let us tell you that the Erode seat of Tamil Nadu, Thirumahan Evra, Jambe Tashi on Lumla seat of Arunachal Pradesh and Subrata Saha in West Bengal’s Sagardighi seat have become vacant due to which by-elections are being held. At the same time, voting is going on for the by-election in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh seat due to the disqualification of Mamta Devi. It was vacant.
Erode by-election
In Tamil Nadu, polling is underway for the Erode East Assembly seat, which fell vacant due to the death of Congress MLA Thirumahan Evra. A total of 77 candidates are in the fray for the election. The main contest in the bypoll is between DMK-backed Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan and AIADMK candidate Thennarasu.
DMK-backed Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan said, “We will win the bypolls with a huge margin. The results of this election will be reflected in the 2024 parliamentary elections. We will win both the elections.”
2.26 lakh eligible voters are going to participate in this by-election and around 2,500 police personnel have been deployed for election duty. Of the 238 polling stations, 32 have been identified as sensitive. 44.58 per cent polling was recorded here till 1 pm.
Ramgarh by-election
Voting for the by-election in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh assembly constituency began at 7 am amid tight security. The district administration has increased vigil as a Congress leader was shot dead ahead of the bypoll. Here out of 405 booths, 144 have been declared highly sensitive.
A total of 18 candidates including 14 independents are in the fray here. The contest will mainly be between the Congress, an ally of the ruling JMM-led alliance, and the candidate of the AJSU party, part of the BJP alliance.
The bypolls are being held here due to the disqualification of Congress MLA Mamta Devi after her conviction in a criminal case. The Congress has fielded Mamta Devi’s husband Bajrang Mahto from this seat, while the AJSU party has fielded Sunita Chowdhary, wife of MP Chandraprakash Mahto. 49.88 polling has been recorded here till 1 pm.
sagardighi bypoll
Polling underway in Sagardighi assembly constituency of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district amid tight security. The main parties in the contest are the ruling TMC, the opposition BJP and the Congress-Left alliance.
The TMC has fielded Debasish Banerjee and the BJP Dilip Saha, while the Left-backed Congress candidate is Byron Biswas. The bypolls are being held due to the death of three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.
48.28 per cent polling was recorded here till 1 pm.
Lumla by-election
A total of 9,169 voters, including 4,712 women voters, will cast their votes at 33 polling stations in Lumla constituency of Arunachal Pradesh. The BJP has fielded Tsering Lhamu for the bypoll. Bypolls are being held here after the death of BJP leader Jambe Tashi.
