Assam Congress: Assam Congress chief Bhupen Bora has demanded the arrest of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. On Wednesday, Bora said that Himanta Sarma should be arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) for taking the help of leaders of the Kuki insurgent group for the Manipur elections.

The party went on a hunger strike in Guwahati to protest Himanta Biswa Sarma’s unconstitutional association with the so-called Kuki extremists. Bora said on Wednesday that for the first time we have heard that a democratically elected chief minister met Kuki insurgents to win elections to the Manipur Assembly. We are curious to see whether the BJP high command takes action against him.

Cookie leader has claimed in a letter written in 2019

Bora said United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) chief Paresh Baruah has always acknowledged Sarma as his former counterpart. A 2019 letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah from a leader of one of the Kuki organizations claimed that two BJP leaders (Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ram Madhav) were in charge. Both had taken the help of Kuki organizations to win the 2017 assembly elections.

The BJP came to power in Manipur for the first time in 2017 and formed the government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Sources said Himanta Biswa Sarma was scheduled to visit Manipur on Wednesday but the trip was canceled at the last moment. It is not known whether the cancellation of Sarma’s visit was related to the latest allegations.
