New Delhi: India’s 19-year-old Prathamesh Samadhan Javkar has brought laurels to the country. Prathamesh Samadhan Javkar won the men’s individual compound gold medal after defeating world No. 1 Mike Schlosser (149-148) in the Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai.

Prathamesh Javkar, ranked 54th in the world, produced his best performance against Schlosser in the final. The youngster started with a 9 in the final, but that was his only shot from outside the center in the title match. Last month, he reached the quarterfinals and finished seventh at the Archery World Cup Antalya Stage I.

Javkar shot 11 consecutive 10s, including six consecutive Xs or inner 10s. The score was 119-119 till the last set. There was immense pressure during the final. Mike Schlosser faltered with a 9 with his final arrow of the match. Javkar accepted it with both hands and won his first World Cup individual gold.

Earlier, the Indian pair of Ojus and Jyoti and the experienced Korean pair of Kim Jongho and Oh Yoohyun scored the same 39 points in the first three stages. In the fourth and final leg, however, the Korean team came under pressure and could only manage 38 points, while the Indian pair again shot 39 to claim their second successive gold medal.
Avneet won bronze
Avneet Kaur won the bronze medal in the women’s individual compound event with a 147-144 win over Turkey’s Ipek Tomaruk. After defeating top seed Oh Yeohyun in a shoot-out in the third round of the tournament, Kaur had earlier lost to veteran Ella Gibson in the semi-finals.
